The Giant’s Causeway
The Giant’s causeway in Northern Ireland is one of the natural wonders of
the World.
The causeway comprises over 37,000 columns of Basalt rock that have formed in
geometrical shapes. Most are hexagonal but some have up to ten sides.
It is owned and managed by the National Trust who run coach shuttles from the
car park down to the site. The site comprises of Grand, Middle, and Small
causeways and is localised to a very short stretch of the Northern Antrim
coastline.
The name comes from the legend of Fin Macool the warrior defender of Ireland
who supposedly gained great wisdom from sucking his thumb! Fin allegedly
constructed the causeway to meet up with a similar formation on the Scottish
Island of Staffa.
