Oxford Street previous next  Covent Garden  Row of London Buses Oxford St means shopping. The shop rents cost more per square foot here than anywhere else in Britain with good reason - more customers spending more money! The choice is fantastic with trendy designer clothes shops to huge department stores. Why not combine some shopping with some sightseeing? There are many places off Oxford Street worth a visit, as we will see, in this London Walk. All our London Walks take about three hours and are on a level gradient. This one is even easier than the others. You may not realise that your tube travel card travel card also covers London buses. Oxford Street is full of buses that you can hop on and off.
We begin this walk at Tottenham Court Rd tube station. Tottenham Court Rd is renowned as THE place to buy brown goods (stereos, TV's etc.). Although there are bargains to be had you must be prepared to haggle and play off prices in one shop with another to get them!
Halfway along our walk is Oxford Circus at the junction of Regent St. This is the busiest and most crowded place in the country!
Oxford Street comes alive at Christmas. The famous lights are switched on in November. Even if you only window shop this is the best retail experience you can ever have. Me, I'll wait for the sales which usually begin on Boxing day. "
 The local colour extends into the phone boxes which are plastered (illegally) with cards promising all types of special services. If you really don't know what French lessons are you should ignore them!  Interior of phone box with pornographic contact cards neatly placed Like all big cities London has its problems. Homelessness is one. If you see someone selling the Big Issue - buy it! It's is an interesting magazine in its own right but that's not why we recommend it. Buy it because the person selling it is homeless and all the cover price goes to them. The founder of the Big Issue recommends that you do not give money to beggars, it ultimately supports the cycle. A word of warning, about pickpocketing. Be sensible with your valuables and you will not be a victim.
You will see unlicensed street vendors selling designer brand goods like perfumes on the street. Don't waste your money. The label might look right but the goods are cheap and counterfeit. At the end of our walk is Marble Arch at the top of Park Lane. If you could do with a rest nip into Hyde Park and nap on a deckchair. You can rent them by the hour!
